Yes, a vest with a ceramic plate should keep someone alive through that. The plate should disperse the energy enough not to cause any injury, and actually, since it's about 15 lbs for a 10x12" plate, should have less impact on the recipient than the shooter had recoil.
Remember, every force is has an opposite reaction. The shooter would feel that more pushing out of the 10lb handgun than would be transfered through a vest and plate, since the plate is heavier, and would be affected less than the revolver.

You can be the judge.....stop at Youtube and there are several video's on the S&W 500 vs whatever (they ain't much leftover tho...) there was one with 7 gallons of water lined up that didn't make it... so if there was a vest that could stop a .50 cal round, there is no guarentee on whats left inside...

They do wear Kevlar vests, but if a bullet comes straight to their face, they have no protection. And those roadside bombs are treacherous. Tell Skip that war is not healthy for children and other living things.

Even if it stopped he projectile, the blunt force trauma through a soft vest would be devastating, with hard or plate armor one would have a higher degree of protection however this is not something you would want to experience.

Probably a class III vest would do that. Very wide pistol bullets such as the .50 aren't your biggest concern with a vest. The FN 5.7mm pistol would be your big worry.

Actually, yes, a "hard vest" or vest with a "trauma plate" would stop the S&W500 round. It would still feel like getting hit in the chest with a baseball bat, but it would stop it. However, no "soft vest" would stop it, and even if it did, JD is right, the blunt force trauma would disrupt your internal organs and kill you.

The blunt trauma could possibly kill you, even if the bullet doesn't penetrate the vest.

Yeah it could. It could protect a tree. It could protect a rock. Might even protect a tire. Would it protect a person?? Well probably not. Might protect you from a closed casket funeral but thats about it.
