where is your hotel located?
(this is assuming that your hotel is around midtown manhattan) if you are coming from jfk, there is an airtrain that will take you the long island railroad (the station is Jamaica Station). You can take the LIRR to Penn Station, which is located on 34th street and 7th avenue.
for laguardia, there is a bus, the m60 bus, that will take you to 125th street (both east and west sides), which is harlem.
The airbus is about $5.00 one way, the LIRR from jamaica is about $5.50 to penn station one way, the bus is $2.00 one way (for the bus, you can only use a metrocard or coins).
What you call metros, we call subways and that is also $2.00 one way.

Well, whereabouts do you live? If it would be less than a two-hour flight to NYC, you're probably better off driving, taking a bus, or taking the train, as both airports, I understand, are way the heck out there in BFE. If you're a greater distance, you could try flying to Newark, NJ, and taking AirTrain into town.
My boyfriend and I have rented a car to drive to NYC before. Parking in NYC is a nightmare unless you pay through the schnozzola for one of the lots that dot the town. Your hotel may also offer parking, also for a fee. The only driving you should even think of doing in NYC is driving to your hotel and then from your hotel out of the city. Traffic in NYC is insane. Walk or use the subway to get around the city.

lol, it's not a nightmare at all. but it will be if you take a car. the traffic in new york (especially manhattan) is ridiculous so the train is much easier but it can get very crowded. people are very pushy in new york that's really the only bad thing. & take a cab from the airport to any destination you want. & from there look for a train station. there are train stations on like every other block. if you cant find a train station just ask someone (i do it all the time). hope you have a good time!
