The stealing of $10 worth of merchandise is still stealing, but the dollar amount is a factor when you go to court. First you will suffer the humiliation of being handcuffed in the mall and led off to a waiting police car, booked (finger prints taken) and photos taken. Since you are only 17, you will most likely be released into the custody of your parents. When you stand before the judge he/she will ask you how you plead (guilty/not guilty) then ask why did you steal the merchandise. Your answer will be weighed against the nature of the offense and your age. More than likely, because of your age and the fact that you have never been in trouble before, you will be given a suspended sentence coupled with community service and possibly bar you from ever going to that particular store again. The judge will determine the community service length against the severity of the crime and what it will take to keep you crime-free so you will never do anything to warrant coming before the court/justice system again. I hope this helps, but please bare in mind that I am NOT a lawyer nor am I a judge. I hope to goodness this is just a hypothetical question. Good luck.... Granny

Most likely the store will get all your information. They will probably ask you for your ID, so they can verify who you are. They will probably let you off with a warning and tell you if they ever catch you again stealing from their store, they will call the police. Most likely the store is not going to prosecute you for $10 worth of merchandise because they don't want to have to pay court costs.

You may have to do a day or a few and maybe pay a fine that is way more than the item stolen. And this all depends if the store presses charges! Good luck!

I was on probation for a year, could not enter the store forever and had to write a letter of apology to the store owner.

Theft in Indiana is a class "D" felony in which can be reduced to a class A misdemeanor if the judge wants to and you have not had one dropped in three years. Please let this be a lesson to you,You don't want a felony on your record.

Prison, huge fine, community service for the rest of your life.
But actually, probably a stern talking to, a little community service, and 6 months of probation, after which charges are withdrawn.

Probably probation and community service. It all depends on the judge and if it seems like you've learned you're lesson.
