Gulf War One's mission was completely different that Gulf War 2. Gulf War one was fast and quick because our objective was to push the Iraqi army out of Kuwait. Gulf War 2 as stated above was to annihilate the Iraqi army completely overthrow the goverment, appease the populace, and institute a new friendly government. It's a long term mission that is likely to last for many years to come.

Actual fighting was about 100 hours.

If I remember correctly, we began deploying troops into Kuwait in August 1990 and fighting began in Jan. 1991. Troops began coming home almost immediately threafter and the vast majority of the troops were home by Fall 1991.

I will add to things to this statement.

1. this is a continuation of that war. The treaty ending that war was violated many times and eventually we continued the war.

2. this "war" lasted 4 weeks to take the whole country. It is the occupation that is taking the rest of the time.
