I'm not sure. I use to not believe it was real, then I experienced it around me (not me personally). I believe its real, I think it happens when you get so involved with the Spirit and your kinda not there in the mind at the moment.

Speaking in a different tongue is Your Own Evidence as well as to let others around you know you have received the Holy Ghost.
You do not get the Holy Ghost any other way...it is evidence
evidence that you have received it
you are not even a true real Christian until you receive the Holy Ghost
It is all of you praying to receive it from God.......what you want most..........to be right with God.......that you want nothing more in all the world but that........to be rfilled with the Holy Ghost.
And you will know ......by speaking in another tongue other than your own.
All of you: heart, soul and mind.
And then there is gifts of the spirit.........speaking in tongues meaning plural (more than one tongue).

Paul said that tongues was supposed to be a language that has meaning 1 Corinthians 14:8-16. Paul said there should be someone who can interpret the language present or to be silent, 1 Corinthians 14:23,27-28. Anyway, Paul says that tongues will cease to be in 1 Corinthians 13:8.

Ok I'll probably catch flack from those who think tongues is some crazy thing that should sound like 'toyotashouldaboughtahonda butigottaford'.
We see that on the day Shavout...'Pentecost' that in Acts they spoke in KNOWN tongues...ie languages! Being a polygot with whom the LORD has blessed with the gift of gab, I do not believe that tongues are some unintelligible gibberish, but actual languages. Acts 2:6-11says: "When this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language. They were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Behold, aren't all these who speak from the Galil? How do we hear, everyone in our own native language? Parthians, Madai, Elamites, and people from Aram-Naharayim(Mesopotamia), Yehudah(Judea), Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Mitzrayim(Egypt), the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Yehudim(Jews) and proselytes, Cretans and `Aravi'im(Arabic): we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of G-d!"

What do you mean by that? There is a big misconception about this topic because people only read part of the chapter and no the whole thing. If you read Acts chapter 2 in it's entirty it will explain that those Christians were not speaking giberish. They were given the ability to speak in different languages, and were understood by others. Peter explained this and on that day many were baptized and became believers. That ability no longer exist in that someone can not just learn a new language instantly. So, back to your question: "Do I believe in speaking in tongues? " The Christians that were present at Penecost in 33 CE were given the abitity to speak in different languages in order to preach to people of the nations, who spoke different languages. That ability no longer exist today.

If you are specifically talking about the Spiritual Gift "speaking in tongues", then the true gift does not originate from the heart, it originates from God. Speaking in tongues is one of those things that requires a direct inspiriation from God, since we can't possibly know another earthly language or the "language of angels." There are plenty of people who speak in tongues who I know for a fact do not receive inspiration from God. They may think they are, but their practice is so unbiblical that I can't imagine God would allow it. The problem with the gift of speaking in tongues is that it offers a HUGE opportunity for abuse. For the sake of looking spiritual or "proving" that they have the Holy Spirit on their side, people will spout out a bunch of nonsense and wave their hands with their eyes closed and make it look like speaking in tongues, but it's not. It's just a bunch of fake spiritual babble. Paul gives very specific instructions on how to conduct the gift of speaking in tongues. It's supposed to be one at a time, with an interpretation from someone else. You can't self-interpret.
I believe that speaking in tongues does exist as a true gift, and I don't believe that it has "passed away" as some denominations of Christianity believe. I have yet to personally experience it in its godly form, but I do believe that others have. I went to a church one time where eveyrone was speakign in tongues all at once, during songs, during the sermon, during prayer. It was disorderly, distracting, and unbiblical.
Anyway, does it exist? Sure...but the kind that comes from our own selves is fake. The true gifting only comes from God.

I'd say it comes from the Holy Spirit. When a man can give a sermon in english, but be 'heard' in spanish or whatever the native language of the listener happens to be, that's more than a human 'heart' is capable of.
edit- It still happens. I've known TWO preachers who have had that happen to them.

The tongues spoken in the Bible book of Acts were human languages, not blah-blah-blah.
So, for example, someone who has never been exposed to the language would be able to speak Chinese, Russian, Swahili, etc.
The point of the tongues was to get the good news across to as many people as possible in a short period of time. The Bible showed that that ability would not be around forever.

But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
Matt 10:19-20
What is it that you shall speak ?
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:25-26
This is having "The Word of God" in your forehead, you think about nothing else, but the Words day and night, you dream of the Words, that are etched in your mind and heart. At times you may think you are going crazy. This is God the Father feeding your spirit, through the Holy Spirit, because you have believed, have done as it is written and have asked.

I'm not sure how I feel about speaking in tongues. The problem I have is this: The point is that the Devil won't understand God's message. But you are supposed to have someone there to translate. So once it is translated so that the congregation understands, won't Satan understand then too?
