I was just inspired to post this question after reading that Scott Baio is now married. As many of you probably know, he was recently on a reality show called "Scott Baio is 45 and Single", in which he discussed his commitment phobia with a therapist. Why do people even use a term like "commitment phobia", anyway? Why does society pressure us to enter marriage and other committed relationships to begin with? Is it inconceivable to some people that there are some of us out there who are perfectly happy being single and are better off not being married?

I think its quite sane to be scared of marriage. I just have to look at all my married friends. Scott Baio needed attention and to make some money and so did the therapist

Ohh thank God I haven't grown up so I don't have to worry about dieing

if they are happy with being single they wouldn't see a councilor about it and they wouldn't call it a phobia or an aversion
everyone looks at the world in different ways
in the past it was always thought
you grow up
get a job
get married
buy a house
have kids
retire
die
that's really all there was and people didn't live as long as they do now
we now have more time and perspectives are changing
but some old thoughts are still around

Very good question, rarely asked. I think it's fair to say that if a weakness is involved, and it causes one to lose important things in life, then it is a problem. Otherwise, more power to the noncommital! (Also fair to say that the "committed" also miss out on some things.)
