nothing but work, pay my bills, and live normally, but my sister, brothers, and mother, all still think I am the same, if I switch jobs, they say "oh did you get fired from drinking? or don't eat that cake, it has alcohol in it, or like recently, I had a hernia operation, and at the family barbecue they all thought I was in the hospital for alcohol treatment, it makes me mad, they don't visit me because they think I am wild, if they were to stop in they would see me sewing or cooking a nice meal. anyone been labeled for life, like me?

It happens...in reality we all do it...My dad has been sober for 8 years and we all assume the same thing your family does about it.....

It's what we know.....it's hard for an old dog to learn new tricks so we have an unbelief about someone changing unless is us that is changing.....

Just be patient they will soon see the Butterfly...... :-)

I have this problem all the time. Just because I wear a bunny suit does NOT mean I'm fair game in the office. Seriously. And when I catch them starting at my tail they turn around and act like I'M the obsessed one. I agree with you. Just tell them to ask you out like normal people. I love my dad too.

Just by what you wrote now I understand why you may have drank in the first place?
Look I had problems with that too in my early 20's and I became normal when I cut my family off.
You need to make your own family with your wife and kids.
I have children now and they full fill my life. I never had happiness until I stopped letting my mother mentally abuse me for years.

Try that and don't listen to them and if you want to go around them they bring up their weaknesses and ask them how they like it.

Yes, I recently stopped drinking, I'm 48 and decided it was time to quit. my family thinks I stopped because i got a DUI (which I didn't). They can't believe I quit just because I was tired of hang overs and spending my hard earned money on booze.
I really don't care what they think, and it is very closed minded of them to think the worst.
You can't change people with closed minds.

You are a drunk for life. Drunks do horrible damage to their families and friends. Sounds like you haven't made amends for the harm you caused. Consider AA.
