For most of us they are not used for prayer. I have some in my room. I keep them because when i look at them i consider the lives of the saints and meditate on God. Their use originated in previous centuries when many people were illiterate. Statues and illustrations were visual aids used to teach the stories of biblical figures.

David M said it better than most. Mostly, it's the Orthodox Christians who use these as reminders of Biblical people, and so forth. I used to work with a lady who, with her husband, moved to America from Moscow, Russia and joined the local Orthodox church in their new hometown.

But you could find more detailed information from an Orthodox priest or church member. Try google-ing for "religious icons" or "Orthodox Church" and see if you find anything there. Sorry, that's about all I can share with you. Best of luck in your search, and a Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Hmm. Icons are basically sort of like religious art, aren't they?

If so, they remind you of the presence of God. They make you feel more as if you're talking to a person rather than to thin air. Its more personal as well - I always feel like I'm talking to someone I know after I see their face. Although we might not be able to see God's or Jesus' actual faces, we can at least have an idea to have about them.
