Blah. Yes, because church buildings are free. And the electric companies don't charge utilities to a church. And you know, if you want to do charitable work, you don't need money for materials, you just need a smile.
Christina....it's called sarcasm.

The idea of body art is actually the funniest thing ever... that and getting drunk.
What a complete waste of money---tattoos, body piercing, and whatever else people dream up to make themselves look like they're cool and part of the 'in' crowd. Some people spend way more on that crap and on partying than those who spend their money on tithing.

Mis-appropriation of funds is exactly why I stay out of the Mega churches. They make me so mad I don't even want to talk about it.
But, if you go to a church like mine, when the attendance is about 100-150 people, you know your money goes to the light bills, mortgage, property tax etc for the church itself. It pays a reasonable salary to the minister & his secretary. The deacons, treasurer and everybody else are considered volunteers and are expected to have real-live jobs during the week. My ministers wife is the school nurse at a local grade school to help pay their personal bills. They pay all their own bills, buy their own cars, the kids go to public school and so on. The house they live in {called the Parsonage} belongs to the church. The family lives there rent-free because the money in the collection plate {which pays his salary} drops to the point sometimes where there might not be enough to pay all the bills every month. {A homeless Minister would be a very bad thing!}
Our tithe money also goes to a over-seas misson fund. We send underpriviledge kids to Bible camp each summer.
You're right, God doesn't need our money; but we are STEWARDS of the money he has entrusted to us throught our income to share with those less fortunate.

It takes money ( among other things) to keep a church going. If your church treats you with as much care as a family would; and if you consider church members to be family, then you help them out as much as you can in any way you can. It does not have to be financially but can be through service, foodstuffs, child care, etc. The LDS denomination does not pay their ward leaders ( called bishops) a salary, nor does it pay the members who clean the church. Bishops must hold down jobs while they head the ward. Monies tithed and collected are divided up for may uses and supporting the Church as well as helping those in need are but some.

I don't care if it's a church or a bell ringer for the salvation army or a tv marathon fund raiser, if the money gets to the so called "good cause" then it's a good thing. If it's fleecing someones pocket then it's bad. How does one determine this? Ah, now there's the question. Just don't throw money blindly to anyone or any institution.

Tithing is not a requirement to be a christian and anyone who tells you that is being unscriptual. It is much like people telling you that you must attend church to be a christian. Neither is a requirement, however it is good to give to the Lord, but giving can be to a charity or people in the community and things like that. As for church it is good to be around other christians so that your faith can grow stronger and you can help your fellow christians, but it isn't a requirement to attend so many services a month to get to heaven.

churches give people lots of help all the time and give free sermons every week. Tithing is just a way to ensure that the church has enough money to take care of its people when they are in need.
My last Bishop worked harder than any man Ive ever seen, and gave so much. He never abused the church money.

I find it sad that people will throw billions of dollars towards the church all because of a bastardized rule that does not even pertain to them. God never commanded anyone outside of the 12 tribes to tithe anything.

I used to think the same thing...Why give away money to people who need it less than I do, but since I joined a church I understand the reason for tithing....Its Gods money anyway, and if you give, you will get back in bigger quanities...He always will supply all your needs...Praise the Lord....

i do!
its just a church tax. The churches used to use money given during mass, as tax to the government.
The church uses money given by its people to do whatever it wants. Some priests are super rich because of it. The churches in europe are lined with gold and opulence. I have to wonder, if all those molestation cases are being paid with parishioners tithings? That would be a great use of their money, i mean, bake sales can only raise so much money.
But, if already needy people are willing to give their money to a wealthy church in hopes of salvation, thats their issue. They can live a paupers life for all care.

The true original meaning of tithing didn't mean giving to a church but giving back to the community. It didn't mean cash either, but in services. Helping each other to thrive.
