The O2 sensor has stopped switching at this point and is causing the engine controler to shut down fuel. when you push the peddle down, it overrides the 02 sensor and the van goes back to running which dumps more fuel in the exhaust and forces the O2 to start switching again.. I had the same problem on my 2000 Dodge Caravan. Change out the O2 sensor.

This could be caused by multiple things. First of all have you had a tune up performed on the vehicle. This could be as simple as bad wires and plugs. Secondly, is the check engine light on. A common problem with the Caravans are that the EGR valve and oxygen sensor get backed up with carbon. This can be diagnosed for free by going to autozone and putting it on the tester (the check engine light must be on).

Most likely it is the EGR valve.

Good Luck!

I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU GET YOUR VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED TO FIND OUT JUST WHAT THE PROBLEM IS FIRST SO THEN YOU WILL HAVE SOME IDEA WHAT IS WRONG AS WELL AS WHAT TO EXPECT.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR ANY CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE PERSONAL SERVICE THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE.
