My nephew is coming up from Alabama to sepend the holiday w/ his father, my brother-in-law. In the 10 years that I have been dating/married to my husband, I have probably only met his nephew 2 or 3 times & the last time I saw him was like 4 or 5 years ago. Well he's coming up & I have no idea what do get him. I don't know him at all. All I know if that his mother & her family are loaded, so I'm pretty sure he already has everything. I don't want to spend alot of money (more b/c I don't have any, rather then b/c I don't know him) but I don't want to look cheap.
Also, should I send him back home w/ a gift for his 12yo, princess sister who I have never met in person? I've never gotten these children a present before. They have no relationship w/ my husband at all....infact, they refuse to even call him Uncle.
What do you think?

Honestly, what I would do is make a donation in their names to some kind of children's charity, and present them with the card they give you. If they already have everything, then they don't need more, and their parents will probably buy them all kinds of stuff for x-mas anyway. Plus, even if they take the card and chuck it, at least the money is being used for a good cause. Better than a cheap toy that will end up under the bed or worse, in the trash.

I would get them both something small. You should not feel pressured to spend a ton of money on people you hardly know! Thats just silly! The holidays are about family and not gifts! I know you feel like you should get them something because he will be there. Just make it a small gift like an RC Car or a game of somekind. Keep it simple and teach the value of $ and how hard it is to earn!

A T-Shirt or sweatshirt from Abercrombie or Hollister. Also, maybe a gift card for I-Tunes or another store that is popular for this age, like Abercrombie or Hollister. Being a 13-year old boy with 3 younger siblings old enough to buy a gift for me, they would never do it, so congratulations for being a nice younger sibling.

What about a book about how money can't buy you happiness? ;)
As for the sister... You definitely need to send something for her.
I was being funny above about the type of book, but the more I think about it, I think a gift certificate to a large bookstore would be good. Try to make it to one that doesn't also sell movies or CDs so they HAVE to buy a book. Anytime you can connect a kid with a book, that's something!

Buy a book for him, either Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket or other teenage fad book that the store could suggest.
Giving a book as a gift to me is like giving someone adventure, power and knowledge..it is truly priceless :o)

Get them something to foster creativity like a jewery making set for her and some art supplies for him. Or a kid-sized musical instrument for each of them? They probably have tons of things that think for them and need a good dose of outside-the-box thinkin'!

They might warm up if you get them something. Kids love a good bribe. It all depends on what the kid is into. Maybe a video game or some Legos or something. Or a children's movie.
