I was last at Camp Liberty when it was still being called Camp Victory North; but that was June 2004 or thereabouts. We still had all of BIAP (Baghdad International Airport) then, too. They had just built a fantastic PX there, with another Burger King--it was the best PX in Iraq at the time. They also had some of the nicest DFACs, and everyone in my unit was stunned to see rows and rows of brand-new white trailers that housed two or three soldiers each, and each had air-conditioning--luxuries we didn't have until later in the game, if at all (I would've loved to have only had one or two people sleeping in the same room as me). They were seeing a lot of mortar attacks at the time, but so was everywhere else on or around BIAP, so that was hardly unusual. 1st Cavalry Division had just moved in and were the first unit to occupy it for a full rotation, to my knowledge. They had pretty good security and amenities, overall, and I'm sure both of those things have been improved since I was there over three years ago. Some people have mentioned boredom... well, boredom's a problem at any Iraq base, pretty much. If he has a computer, DVD player, or TV with videogame console (Xbox, Playstation, Wii), he'll be set. If they have internet--and I'm sure they have internet cafes, since they had them there three years ago--he'll be set. If he's a reader and has plenty of books, he'll be set. I don't know what his job is in is unit, but if he's doing his job every day, he'll be set. There are ways to deal with boredom; and frankly boredom's the least of your worries there. Boredom's better than stress.

Having been to Liberty and some of the other not-so-nice places that are much worse the biggest thing is the boredom. While Liberty is the nicest just imagine not being able to leave the neighborhood that you live in for an extended period of time or very often. Along with the boredom there are of course all the other aspects, separation from home and loved ones and everything that a person used to be able to do but no longer can because of where they are at. That was one thing about Vietnam that was different; you had R&R, greater access to some of the normal entertainment and recreation type things than what this war allows.

Camp Liberty was great. You live in trailers there's a good bizarre and really good dfacs. lol. It's connected with Camp Victory so he's also by a couple of the palaces. There's 2 pools near him. Camp Liberty is pretty nice. Well for being in Iraq. He was lucky he got one of the good places.

i was at camp liberty. also a couple of other camps. camp liberty was the nicest one. they have lakes and palm tress, not quite a tropical oasis but a whole lot better than other camps.

the only real problem, when i was there, was the indirect fire (mortars) but alot of the bldgs there are not trailers, they are concrete and even IF there is a direct hit. the blds handle it with not a whole lot of damage.

i know it is tough while your hubby is away. time does go by faster than you think. take care.

Camp Liberty is one of the nicer (and safer) bases here in Iraq. Overall, I would rather be there than where I am. That should tell you something.

l like going there, so that should tell you it is a nice base! Are there dangers?.........sure it can happen anywhere. I'm sure he'll be fine, he's been through the training before deploying so he'll know how to handle himself.
