To connect to online play, doest the playstation pick up on the signal or do you need to connect it with a wire??

The PS3 can connect either way. The wireless is built in to the PS3 so if you have a wireless router at home just go into the PS3 Internet setup and use the automatic scan it will find it and configure it automatically.

You can use wired or wireless ...Wireless depends on whether or not you have wireless internet at home or not if you do ps3 comes with wirelss ability built in. . Wired just connects to the router or laptop to use the internet. .

Only long gone 20GB had no wi-fi. Other versions give you both - wi-fi and wired. Wi-fi has an advantage of no cables to trip over, but it's not really stable and slower, than a wired connection.
