Since you're having Italian, you got to try Chianti. It's a red wine, but not a strong, tannin red wine. Also, the straw mat covered bottle adds a little extra charm.

If you don't usually enjoy red wines, I'd try a Sangiovese. Sangiovese is a medium bodied dry red wine with earthy aromas and berry, plum, spicy, or floral flavors. It has a smooth texture. Sangiovese is the main grape used to produce Italian Chiantis.

I would go with a chianti or a Regiano Lambrusco which is a semi soft red wine. Both are easy on the bitterness.

I suggest this for red wine when its not suitable for ur pallate. Pour red wine into a pitcher and add ur favorite fruit juice or just squeeze in fresh fruit. Called Sangria and helps reduce the bitterness of red wine.

How about riunite; it's a red but it's somewhat sparkling and not very earthy.
