My daughter has a piano exam on Wednesday. I am a FRSM standard pianist and am a music teacher, but she doesn't have lessons from me because I'm her mum and she probably won't listen.
She's getting all teary now because she thinks she can't play well enough. Her teacher goes away tonight. What should I do? Should I take her through the pieces myself?

I'm concerned that she'll get upset and start fighting with me and that I'll confuse her.
Thanks everyone, except the last two.

Of course you should. As a parent I am not my child's teacher but when they come home with homework I then need to step in and assist them if they need help. Who knows maybe it will be a really great bonding time for the two of you.
Addition:
You said you are concerned that she will get upset. I think that if you just help her but don't criticize she will be fine. Most kids can deal with getting help it's when they feel like the parent is making them feel bad about there mistakes they act out towards it. If she does just tell her I am sorry I won't be able to help you if you act this way and tell her when she is ready to work on it maturely you will be waiting in the other room.

Yes, helping her seems to be only solution since her music teacher is going away tonight. I'm sure your daughter will do fine on the Wednesday's piano exam. ^ ^ Good luck!

Yes you should help her, and if she doesn't want you to help her.. and continues to cry about it. Tell her that practice will always make you better, and if you practice with someone who knows what there doing then you will become better faster. Put it in your own words but if she doesn't understand that tell her that she shouldn't be crying bout it because if your not willing to do what ever you can to get well enough, then your crying is doing nothing but holding you back from other things.

Main thing is to be calm showing her that you are not concerned. Too much stress, of course, isnt healthy for her as I am certain you know. If she asks you, of course take her through; but otherwise just smile and give her the confidence by matter-of-factly not being worried about it.

This is a no brainer! yeah, teach her yourself. If she doesn't listen to you then its her fault and she will do poorly on her exam. Next time, she'll listen to you and let you teach her.
