That was me 5 years ago, can be very painful. It's called TMJ or Bruxism. (Stress is a major player here)
My problem? Clenching teeth while sleeping. (Some people actually clench or grind during the day.). I had to wear a mouth guard while sleeping, did this for only 3 weeks. Of course the dentist said this is not long enough to solve problem, but i was determined to stop it on my own & was successful!
I concentrated on relaxing my jaw at night, this took few weeks, but it worked!
I am happy to report not one episode of "lock-jaw" or pain for 5 years!
Please take care of this now, otherwise it can get much worse.
Good luck!

when I was in middle school, my jaw locked a lot. I dont think I ever said anything to anyone. I just left it, normally I could mess with it enough it would unlock. and after a while it just better. now eightish years later, it only locks occasionally when i sleep, i i can fix it by tilting my head right and pushing on the left. but my bones always pop on that side when I open and close my mouth.

You may have lock jaw or TMJ. You should go to a dentist and they can help. I had it and they gave me a gaurd when i slept. Usually that helps but if that doesn't they can break your jaw and put it back in place.

this is a condition usally caused by grinding or clenching your teeth while you are sleeping. Your Dr can recommend some treatments to aliviate this , such as a night brace for your jaw, not very sexy, but it will alivite this condition.

THE TMJ ON THIS SIDE HAS BEEN DISPLACED. WHILE THIS JAW JOINT IS OUT OF PLACE YOU WILL CONTINUE TOO HAVE ALL THE SYMPTOMS.
SO, THEN HOW IT BE FIXED?
THE GRINDING AT NIGHT, USUALLY CAUSED BY STRESS, WILL CAUSE THIS.
SO, HOW CAN THE GRINDING BE STOPPED AND THE SYMPTOMS ALLEVIATED?
YOUR DENTIST MUST MAKE YOU AN N.T.I. BRUXISM APPLIANCE. SEE THE LINKS BELOW FOR MORE INFO.

That should be surgically fixed if it causes pain and you say it happens often. Ask a doctor.
