The display is calibrated to show "0 db" when the volume knob is set to produce 100% of the rated power.

If your receiver is rated at 85 watts per channel into a 8 ohm load, setting the volume knob to "0 db" will try and provide 85 watts. This is normally WAY to loud, but it lets you know when you are approaching the limits of the amp.

Note: The display is approximate. The receiver cannot know with your speakers and distance in your room how much volume you get. The model to use is they have a "reference" 8 ohm speaker and measure the volume 1 foot in front, (They dont really do this - but thats why this is a model).
