If you know his favorite hobby get him a t-shirt, hat or mousepad related to it. Apparel related to his hobby. Guys are cool that way. We love corny stuff.

Ask him gentle probing questions about his interests. For example I found out how much my guy loves tennis, computer gaming, and of course sex. Most guys love some sport, gaming system, and/or sex. Find which of these he likes by asking him what he does when he's just chillin, maybe its movies, or food. Before we married I got my guy tennis items I knew he would use (not dust collectors), a few pc games (expansion - since he already had the main games), and now that we are married - sex! LoL - seriously that is what he wants for his presents so that is what he gets. I do something extra extra special for these. I know that is not where you are currently so I'd stick with the sports, games or expansions. Tickets to a local sporting event was always a good one for my guy. Early on I found local boxing that didnt even cost anything and took him to that. It was more the effort than the actual gift in that instance that worked.

next time you're at his house, take a close look around. Maybe if he has a movie you know has a sequal, get him that. Or if you'd notice something he has is worn out (maybe like a jacket or something) get him a new one.

Maybe you could make him a dinner or a night out on the town.

Most guys would like anything that you have taken the time to put thought into. It doesn't have to be expensive, just something that shows you personally care.

a commonplace gift can do,if you send him the commonplace(people often send to people, not a special one),it can show your warm heart and cares about him.Cause it is a common present, similar to other's gift,it doesn't mean to your further relationship with him,you are just a common friend.

or you just give him a candy!(it just joking)

"Experiential" gifts are all the rage now. Examples - a whitewater rafting trip, a skydiving adventure, a round of golf at his favorite country club, etc.
