there is a herbal alternative, St Johns Wort, but you do need to ensure you are not allergic to it & check with your GP, Doctor before you start taking it.
if you do have reaction problems, ask in the health food shop for any others they would recommend.
be prepared to wait a week or two for their full effects to kick-in.
i hope you manage to get on with St Johns Wort, i've been taking it for several years now, with no ill-affects & so far they're still working.

about 5 years ago, I started to fall into a really depressive episode. At first I thought it was only because I had a bad break from a relationship but the feelings wouldn't go away even after I got a new girlfriend. It was wrecking my life until a point where it was seriously affecting my work and personal life.
She was very worried but at the same time couldn't understand why I was still sad and thought that I still couldn't let go of my previous relationship. Being the wonderful person that she is, she put aside her feelings and suggested I go for psychiatric evaluation. Many months later and even more anti-depressants, I was not coming close to being better at all.
After doing some research online, I found out the real cause as you described it really makes a lot of sense and purchased this program. The results were simply astonishing. I read this book over three times and put all words in action. Using this method, I've kept my depression at bay ever since. Up to date I'm still living happily with my girlfriend.

First you need to eat well.
Hapiness is created by the release of serotonin and various other chemicals, your brain is having trouble making or releasing these chemicals.
Food is like a drug or fuel it can help with the production of these chemicals.
To fin what sort of foods you need to eat I would recommend the book in the link.
Step 2 take more excersis try an get at least half an hour a day, I hate running so i prefer to go swimming, or play badminton go to the gym. After a session of excersise you will always feel better combined with eating well should see an improvement in how you feel

Exercise releases Endorphins which is a chemical that when reaches your brain, makes you happier. Vitamin D (aka sunlight) also helps.
Seriously, these things are scientifically proven but when I was going through depression, they worked for me also. People are saying chocolate. You can try this for yourself but when I eat bad food, I feel like crap after. If those tablets are making you sleep bad, consult your doctor, as sleep is important, and can make you feel worse if you're not getting an adequate amount.

If your depression is caused by anxiety which is likely, anti-anxiety drugs could help. Sleeping pills can help you sleep and if you sleep well you will be able to deal with depression. It is important to eat healthy and regular meals and drink enough water. Try some relaxation techniques. If these things don't help, try another antidepressant. St John's Wort is not a good alternative.

johns wort is supposed to be okay, exercise increases serotonin levels to boost your mood, bananas aswell. Tablets are not always the awnser though, not a permanent one atleast.
I have been where u are and its tough, you have to put your finger on why it is you feel down, maybe your job or partner? theres usually a reason underlying, mine was a lifestyle change and doing things that make me feel happy, i can look back now and see why i was down, i hope this helped, feel better soon x

St. Johns Wort is very effective, however, it does increase photosensitivity in those with fair skins, and can cause them to have a prickly rash when used in high doses.
Bananas, kiwi fruit, guavas, nuts and pulses all provide nutrients that are beneficial when feeling depressed.
Acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy can also help to alleviate symptoms.
I wish you well.

Physical exercise definitely helps. Be very careful of St John's Wort. It caused me to have severe migraines.
