i have 3 potatoes boiling and when i went to check on them there still hard. How long does it take for it to be soft?

and yes the potatoes are whole, and i added salt.

It really depends on your climate, how many potatoes, how much water, how much salt, and how you cut them (are they whole?); but 20 minutes is a good starting point to check.

I'd say about 30-50 mins. But after 30mins, pick one out of the pot and prick with a fork. If the tines of the fork still meet a lot of resistance from the center, keep boiling it further. If you meet less resistance and its still slightly firm, the potato is ready to be drained and sliced. Don't leave it too long in the boiling water or it will become mushy. Good luck! P/S: I should add that Russet is faster to boil. I don't primarily use Russet because the lack of starch is what makes its texture - grainy. But, this is the healthier choice of potato to use. I usually use the cheaper, yellow Holland potatoes. More starchy and has a smoother consistency after they are cooked through. That was why the 30-50 minutes limit. Sorry for the confusion.

Depending on how big the chunks are then 10 to 15 minutes. If whole they will take longer.

about 20-30 min in high & cut, whole should be 40-55 min

It takes as long as it takes, usually yellow are less time because they're creamy.
