Why was it a woman/lady who played the role of a male character in that TV series?

Xu Xian. is the guy, it's based on an ancient legend, so you'll have to ask whoever wrote that story several centuries ago.

Images only have to be censored if they're deemed "obscene." This is, effectively, jargon for saying that it is intentionally sexually titillating. Of course, a lot of nudity may be for humor or other purposes, but most networks take the shotgun approach and censor everything, including people of any race no matter the reason for the nudity. The difference with National Geographic and the History Channel (among others) is that since they're showing people in their natural domain and natural state of dress, not even acting in most cases, they're more or less assured that they are in the clear since it's educational and not meant to be sexual at all, after all, these people are like that every day. It's not a big secret that the communities that have this specific state of dress and are likely to catch the eye of these teams are typically not white, but that's a coincidence, and in fact sometimes if researchers live with them and adopt their state of dress they won't be censored either, even it they're white. Likewise, if a black, asian, or person of another ethnicity were to do something in, say, a comedy or some sexual context they are DEFINITELY censored if possible. Race doesn't play into it, context does.
