A few days ago, my friend and I went to the women-only swim session at out local pool, and we both went swimming topless. When we were finished and heading for the showers, one of the lifeguards came up to us and said that in future we shouldn't go topless, and the manager spoke to us afterwards and said the same thing.

Am I missing something here? Surely half the reason for having women-only swim sessions is so that women can swim topless, or in a thong bikini, or nude, or just in a normal swimsuit, or however they like and be comfortable with it since there are no men watching?

I did ask the manager... she just said "It's the rules". She didn't say anything about anyone complaining.

And I should point out that women will expect to see each other nude in the showers (some do shower in swimsuits, but not everyone), so why not in the pool?

It never ceases to amaze me how much stress the sight of simple, ordinary bare skin (and not all bare skin, just certain bare skin) has for some people. It's 2007, and many people still cling to the notion that certain body parts are offensive or inappropriate and definitely not to be exposed to view, except in certain, highly structured and limited situations.

Believe me, I truly respect everyone's right to their opinions, and their right to enjoy life without other people forcing their beliefs upon them.

Being topless is not "bad", nor is being completely covered "bad". It's a personal choice.

But for many of us, it's not something to get upset about. If I choose to be topless or nude, and someone else chooses to be covered, we need to respect each other's rights and not try to impose one upon the other.

Don't try to make someone cover up if they choose to be naked (in appropriate places and situations, of course), and don't try to make someone get naked if they're more comfortable being covered.

Bottom line: nudity is nothing more than bare skin, and we all have it.

So OK...let's all go for a swim, wearing or not wearing whatever we want.

I disagree with the other two answerers slightly, depends whether you go to the patrolled beaches or not. Some states have designated nude beaches. At the closest "family" beaches to the main cities you will not see this all that regularly but not too far away at unpatrolled beaches topless would not raise too many eyebrows. Full on nude probably would unless very remote. Skinny dipping is not OK at public pools but you would not be too surprised to see it in national parks & etc. Aussies views about nudity vary the same as the US - probably not as puritanical. The standard attitude would be the one you would get around, say So-Cal. If you do encounter this, it would be way uncool to start drooling on your feet or start looking for rocks to throw at her. If you strike up a conversation it may be an idea to ensure you make eye contact at least, say - 5% of the time.

I think the concept of female-only swim is to make some women more comfortable. Some women don't like men ogling them or their bodies.

Where we are from, there are no topless swim sessions.

Hmm i've never heard of female-only swim, but in my head I would think it's for women who aren't comfortable being in a bikini or bathing suit in front of men, not being topless. Maybe the pool doesn't want to get a bad rep, or maybe they are worried somebody might look in. Whatever the reason, if that's their policy there isn't much you can do about it. I'm surprised they didn't say anything to you the entire time you were there.

If that is their policy, it is OH SO FLAWED!

I suppose the purpose of the women's only swim is so that overweight or shy women don't have to feel self consious in their bathing suits in front of men. Therefore, the rule was put into place so women could be comfortable.

But to some women, swimming topless or nude is very comfortable too. Telling those women they can't swim nude (which I guarantee the person who complained was heavier than you) is still only protecting the obese women, and that makes the rule biased.

Take it up with the owner! Most women who sit in the steam room or sauna, do so completely naked. So what is the difference???

it's kinda like no shirt, no shoes, no service. it is implied that clothing is required in our country... ppl are too uptight about nudity. if you are looking for the places few and far btwn where nude swimming is allowed, they are called "nude beaches" otherwise, swimsuits are required. they would probably have women-only swim sessions thinking about fitness and women's discomfort being in a swim suit in front of ppl, not for the purpose of topless swimming.

Well, I've skinny dipped a few times, so I just might.

They may have it as women only so that women will not feel like they are being ogled by the men staring at them. Did you stop and think of how other women feel, they might have been uncomfortable swimming with you and your friend around topless. Stop and smell the roses sweetie not everyone wants to look at your ta-tas.

Maybe you are making the other women feel uncompilable? I wouldn't want to swim with half naked women, but that is just my opinion. If everyone is comptable with it, and the whole class is OK with it, then do for it.

Live and Let Live.

Just because it is all female it doesn't mean they are going to be comfortable with your nudity. Would you go topless to an all female exercise class? Put your top on.
