I have had many good answers so far to the original question but it leads to another one. Having young children in school, I decided to become a sub to be able to be there for my kids. My issue is how many teachers/para/cafe workers I saw screaming at the kids. Even the pre k para would yell at them in a manner that if it were my child, there would be a problem. I have seen several cafe workers scream directly in the ears of some children and others workers not say a thing. This was a daily problem. Should I report these people? It seems that every time that I try to bring to attention these things, it is turned around and I'm the weird outsider. Or I am making a big deal out of something. I tried to use a different behavior and approach and the workers saw that my way was working and they seemed to stop yelling, but I'm gone now and their behavior is probably back to before. Also, every school I worked at had at least 1 screamer. Every parent: have lunch w/kids.

No, I never worked at the same school as my children. And having lunch with them I noticed their workers were not like the ones I am talking about so I know that not all workers are like this. The kids were yelled at for things such as dropping food on the counter, not moving in line fast enough or taking too much food. One para would snap her fingers right in the kids face and tell them to be quiet. The practices they were using were uneffective but they still used the same negative responses to the kids.

First try to approach the worker's in question and make a comment about the screaming in the nicest way you can think of. And if it gets you no where then report it to supervisor and then if they do nothing report it to next superior/principal. It is common for workers to have to raise their vioce due to kids not listening, but to scream in the children's ear is wrong. There are better ways to get the kids to listen. Good luck.

You should report those people who are not adult enough to control themselves when speaking to a child. Even if the child has done something wrong, something he was told not to do, that does not give the adult the right to scream at the child, especially young children. Stand up for what you believe in! You may the only one who can make a difference in what is happening. There are so many other ways to discipline a child or get his attention that screaming and most of these alternative ways are effective.

Many of us had cranky cafeteria workers, teachers, and other school staff...we all survived. Stop coddling your children. Though I hate yelling, it may be necessary sometimes. And are they really yelling or are you just overly sensitive. And did you see what the child was doing, maybe the child isn't a good listener or its kind of loud in the cafeteria and he/she didn't hear the worker.

You should so report them or ask if you could sub more or something to see if they have changed at all.

If I were you I would report them because this is totally unhealthy for your child and could make them violent or something. Trust me, same thing happened with my brother.

Teachers are so not allowed to do that.

I would report them....My philosophy treat other peoples children the way you would want them to treat yours. Hellions or not no child deserves that from anyone.
