I worked for awhile as a newspaper typesetter, and we published the kindergarten-1st grade letters to Santa (it was a small town paper). Most of the requests were for computers, makeup, leather skirts (for first graders?!), four-wheelers, etc. But then I came across a whole batch of letters from one class whose teacher was obviously really trying to teach through the letter-writing. Each letter had scrawled on it something like, "Please don't forget the poor people." One little girl even wrote, "You don't need to bring me a lot, so give my stuff to somebody who needs it more."

I found out from a parent in that school that the teacher consistently teaches the children about sharing and they do little service projects. So yes, in some hearts, it's still the season of giving.

Peace and a wonderful season to you, Red Queen.

it is humanly impossible for one person to deliver billions of presents in less than 12 hours world wide.

If he does exist, then he must have a lot people helping him out, and I'm sure you know who they are.

A FEW years ago the assistant managing editor of the U.S. Catholic magazine wrote:

“Whereas the true lesson of Christmas is a message of divine mercy and sacrifice, Santa is the front man for greedy corporations, and the tutor in greed for millions of American children. He is the saint of gimme. He has become a total sellout to materialism and greed. He is in the pay of the big toy manufacturers and department stores. A greedy child is never appeased. A spoiled child appreciates nothing. An overindulged child is convinced that the major figure of Christmas is not Christ, but himself.”

This editor thought that Santa should have been left at the North Pole.

Our children, from and early age, knew, and were told there was no such person as Santa Claus, we never had a problem with them. We did not set one day out of the year to give presents to our children, it could be any day, week, or month.

Commercialism has ruined the feeling of Christmas.

It is the season of gimme and no longer the season of giving. If something is given it is given with return expectations; a sad commentary on society today, but then so many things are wrong on our society today it is best not to begin enumerating them!!

My husband and I hardly ever buy gifts. We sometimes buy for each other, and sometimes us kids go in a buy mom something. My favorite thing to get at Christmas is my cards. The past few Christmas's I haven't been well so I am hoping this year I will be able to go visit my family.

It is supposed to be the "Season of Giving", however due to commercialism (part of secular society), it has become the "Season of Gimme". In fact if you want to go farther, Christmas is supposed to be celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, our saviour. The gifts should be to him not to ourselves.

I think it would be good if people gave to those in need and maybe worried a little less about getting new diamond earrings or Cartier watches. That aspect has gotten way out of hand.

I dislike the holiday. Aside from the commercialism and the fact I do not celebrate it religiously there are other reasons that are personal which have tainted the holiday for me.

Celebration of light and life in the face of darkness.

I *like* giving presents, but keep it in moderation.
