its called a ratio shot - one side is lighter or darker than the other

easy way is in a dark room, use a small light to the side of someones face and expose for the lit side - will have to use manual exposure for the best result, the harder way is to do it with off camera flash

The light source is to the right of the subject, slightly behind and up high.

you should try buying a lamp with a bright light and sit in a dark room and shine the light on your face just a little bit
