If your state allows baiting, follow the guidelines for your state to set out baits. I prefer a tree stand over bait, this allows you the chance to verify that it is not a sow with cubs, and generally gives you a much better shot angle, which results in a clean harvest. If bait isn't an option in your state, I still hunt logging roads and old burned out or loogged out areas and meadows. This is where pre season scouting pays off!!!
My last area to hunt is along riverbanks or near high country lakes.
Good luck

There is quite a bit to learn as far as bear hunting, far too much for me to type all that information here. So are some good links.

Black bear are much easier to kill than; brown bears, grizzlies, or polar bears. This is due to less body mass, thinner skull, and well just less for the bullet to have to get through.
I have taken them with many types of firearms and bows.
I also recommend a tree stand.
Good hunting!
