Just Let them know you are nervous and they will take care of you. Most people aren't afraid of the DDS and so they are treated like any other person, but if you let them know you are nervous they will try to be nicer and explain things more.
Oh. I'm not sure how old you are but my dentist use to have a teddy bear I could hold onto , I'm a nervous nelly also and it helped calm me down, and yes I am grown. I would go ahead and take some advil or tylenol before you go in. If this is your 1st visit they will probably just do some exrays and will clean your teeth. This generally tickles but your mouth will be a little sore with them having you to open wide and therefore I like to some advil before. I have a little mouth and ask them to put some vaseline on the corners of my mouth so that they want split. They want mind. Hope this helps.

hey there, dont be worried - a private dentist is no different to an nhs dentist - some do work for both :D
the only difference you will find is in the cost of your treatment!
hope it all goes well.

Hope you have a very large Bank balance....you will need it. A relative of mine just paid nearly £200 for an inspection, and a clean. Half an hour...

Take an mp3 player with you with your favorite songs on it. Your brain can not think about two things at once and as you concentrate on the music, you won't feel as much pain from what they may do, other than when you see the bill!!
