Most libraries are indexed by Author, Title or Subject. If you know who wrote the book you are looking for, that would be the Author index. If you know the Title of the book that would be the Title index and if you are looking for books written about a particular subject (for instance books on religion, books about cars, books about Lincoln, books about Alaska etc) then the Subject index would be the most helpful.

Merry Christmas!

You can look up something by the topic or subject. Some examples of subjects are sewing, baseball, Peloponnese Wars, etc.

It's one of three parts of the antiquated card catelog. the others being title and author.

We learned it by drill back in the 80's and I haven't seen a card catalog in forever, at least not a current one. It's been usurped by the internet to the extreme.
