Friend,
here is what Karma (Duty) is as per Bhagavad geeta;
''Karma Yoga is essentially Acting, or doing one's duties in life as per his/her dharma, or duty, without concern of results - a sort of constant sacrifice of action to the Supreme. It is action done without thought of gain. In a more modern interpretation, it can be viewed as duty bound deeds done without letting the nature of the result affecting ones actions. It is said that the results can be of 3 types - as aimed for, opposite of what is aimed for, or a mixture of these. If one can perform his duties (as prescribed in the Vedas) without any anticipation of the result of his actions, he is bound to succeed. It includes, but is not limited to, dedication of one's chosen profession and its perfection to God. It is also visible in community and social service, since they are inherently done without thought of personal gain.
Krishna advocates 'Nishkam Karma Yoga' (the Yoga of Selfless Action) as the ideal path to realize the Truth. Allocated work done without expectations, motives, or thinking about its outcomes tends to purify one's mind and gradually makes an individual fit to see the value of reason and the benefits of renouncing the work itself. These concepts are vividly described in the following verses:
"To action alone hast thou a right and never at all to its fruits; let not the fruits of action be thy motive; neither let there be in thee any attachment to inaction".
"Fixed in yoga, do thy work, O Winner of wealth (Arjuna), abandoning attachment, with an even mind in success and failure, for evenness of mind is called yoga".
"With the body, with the mind, with the intellect, even merely with the senses, the Yogis perform action toward self-purification, having abandoned attachment. He who is disciplined in Yoga, having abandoned the fruit of action, attains steady peace..." .In order to achieve true liberation, it is important to control all mental desires and tendencies to enjoy sense pleasures. The following verses illustrate this.
"When a man dwells in his mind on the object of sense, attachment to them is produced. From attachment springs desire and from desire comes anger."
"From anger arises bewilderment, from bewilderment loss of memory; and from loss of memory, the destruction of intelligence and from the destruction of intelligence he perishes"

1. Find your natural aptitude(s). Find work befitting your aptitude(s). Your aptitude(s) are your own and have no bearing to who you are born to.
2. Do your work by focusing on the process of working. Setting goals is not wrong... but constantly looking at the goal alone is mere dreaming. Focus on the work at hand and the goal in the horizon has a better chance of showing up.
3. If the goal that you had did not showup, understand that five things have to come in place - the context (timing), the doer (your actions), the tools in one's hand, the way the tools are used and divine providence. If you understand this, you will understand why your job is not to worry about the result, for the only thing in your control is the job of acting!
4. Last but not the least, realize that it is easier to perform action with renunciation than to perform renunciation of actions! Both need practice, the former is much much easier and the latter cannot be fully avoided even by ascetics, as one has to act at least for the very maintenance of one'sbody!

Everyone of us has to perform his or her duty designated as Svadharma, to serve the world and to repay one's debt to the society. Svadharma implies ambition commensurate with one's capacity and the necessary inclination as also the drive to achieve it. Our well being lies in performing our Svadharma. Paradharma, duty suitable for others but not for us, will positively harm us if chosen by us.
If you have qualified as a civil engineer, work in that field. If that civil engineer tries to do a brain surgery he can harm the patient. Be the best in what you are good at is the duty.

Acts of sacrifice, charity and penance are not to be given up but should be performed. Indeed, sacrifice, charity and penance purify even the great souls.
All these activities should be performed without any expectation of result. They should be performed as a matter of duty.

Do the work that is assigned to you or find yourself with by virtue of your position,demand of the situation, your capacity, or duty as a social being without bothering about the results of such action on your benefit- that we must leave it to God,he knows better!.When we keep on doing our job well for its own sake,we are bound to get what we need ( not greed! ),by concentrating on the fruit of action we often fail to do the action well!

Duty is the work assigned to you by God. e.g. It is the duty of a housewife take care of her family and home. Of the four castes in Hind religion. It is the duty of a brahmin to preach religion. Duty of kshatriya is to fight in war. duty of vaishya is to earn money, do business. and duty of sudra is to do menial jobs. Duty assigned to each sect should not overlap. e.g. When Arjuna, being a kshatriya, refuses to fight, and behave like a brahmin, renouncing the world. The Lord repramands him for this.Says it is the duty of a kshatriya to fight.
