I was hoping that someone here could help me in regards to where to volunteer on Christmas day in Melbourne/Victoria.

My partner and I are looking to give the morning/ lunchtime on Christmas day to help with some type of community Christmas event, such as serving lunch to the homeless.

We tried contacting the salvos but they weren't interested, does anyone know of any charities or places for us to call?

Thanks

There are a lot of resources for you to find volunteering opportunities in Melbourne:
http://www.idealist.org

Volunteer Australia
http://volunteeringaustralia.org

Australian Volunteer Search
http://www.volunteersearch.gov.au/

GoVolunteer
http://www.govolunteer.com.au/

Volunteering during the holidays can be very difficult, because organizations are overwhelmed with requests from people wanting to do such at this time of year -- there often aren't enough opportunities to go around. You will probably have to contact many organizations before you are ultimately chosen.

I've never been to Australia, so I don't know your community, but if I were you, I'd contact nursing homes in your area and see if you can visit with some or a few of the residents on Christmas Day. You can sing carols with them or read to them. You'd be surprised how many folks don't have anyone visit them on any day, but especially Christmas. You'll find this experience rewarding and it will enrich your life immeasurably.

Even if you think you can't sing, sing anyway. Music and song are Gifts from God and older people oftentimes remember music when they've forgotten everything else. Good luck, and may God bless you.

Try ringing Sacred Heart Mission, 87 Grey St, St Kilda: ph: 03 9537 1166. They do luncheon every day for the homeless, and a special dinner for Christmas. I expect they could always do with another pair of hands!
