They say to hide old toys for about 6 months. Bring them back out and the kids will think that they are new. I can sympathize. When I was young, I loved to play with the cardboard boxes that the toys came in.
How old are the kids?
Good Luck!

Of course. It's a kid thing.
Little kids neither actually want nor need the latest electronic gadgetry etc. Nothing can replace basic pretend play with whatever comes to hand and a bit of ingenuity. They need to interact with PEOPLE not machines.
I had a "rule" when my two were tiny; toys requiring batteries were discouraged at our house. Funny how slow the Outlaws (only set of grandkids) were to catch on - until they realised the cost of them, just based on one afternoon a week. And they Yorkshire born and bred too, hehehehehe. The power of imagination suddenly became much more attractive.

My youngest son (2 in Jan.) would rather have a box to play in, but my older two, 7 and 5, would much rather have toys, but only to play with them for a couple weeks after Christmas. We set a limit of about 75.00 per child this year and stuck to it pretty good. They each got two outfits and 5 toys apiece.

Imagination is the best toy ever. My kids love playing with the boxes things come in more than any toy that comes in them.

My son used to like the boxes more than the toys, he has/had a great imagination and would make spacecrafts etc out of them.
This year hes at uni and will be getting a scalectrix - never has grown up!

boxes, egg crates, oatmeal boxes , cat food cans unopened, old phones, empty dish liquid for tub, silverware for tub, plastic cups, VHS movie boxes, empty coffee canisters, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, plastic hangers, shoe boxes, golf balls, LOL, these and more are always chosen over toys, start shopping for your toys at thrift stores there shelf life is not that long, as you have learned the hard way, but that money could go very far at thrift stores i have 5 children thank goodness for thriftstores, and all the food containers we go thru

Yes! My daughter is obessed with always having to get a toy when we go to the toy and I explain to her not everytime she needs a toy. Its unbelievable how many toys clatter her room. She gets a brand new toy and 15 minutes later she don't want to play with it anymore. She likes playing with boxes and now the roll of wrapping paper.
