Atheism, as a philosophical view, is the position that either affirms the nonexistence of gods, or rejects theism. When defined more broadly, atheism is the absence of belief in deities, alternatively called nontheism. Although atheism is often equated with irreligion, some religious philosophies, such as secular theology and some varieties of Theravada Buddhism, also lack belief in a personal god.

Many self-described atheists are skeptical of all supernatural beings and cite a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Others argue for atheism on philosophical, social or historical grounds. Although many self-described atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.

The term atheism originated as a pejorative epithet applied to any person or belief in conflict with established religion. With the spread of freethought, scientific skepticism, and criticism of religion, the term began to gather a more specific meaning and has been increasingly used as a self-description by atheists.

The absence of belief in gods.
It can be divided into implicit and explicit atheism. An implicit atheist is one who lacks belief in gods either because they don't understand the concept of gods (eg. babies) or because they simply haven't given it any thought. An explicit atheist has considered the matter and still has no belief in gods.
Explicit atheism can be further divided into strong and weak atheism. Strong atheism is the positive belief that no gods exist, while weak atheism is atheism without such a positive belief. Weak atheists are also known as agnostic atheists. All implicit atheists also come under the definition of weak atheism.

Atheism is a word derived from two Greek words, 'Theo' meaning 'God' and the prefix 'A' meaning 'Without'.

Quite simply, Atheism is a philosophy/worldveiw that does not beleive in a God or Gods. Some more extreme branches of Atheism also deny the existance of spiritual powers and the human soul.
(This is usualy called Materialism)

An atheist is a person who believes there is neither magic, nor supernatural powers such as ghosts, gods, witches, tooth fairies, and so forth. Atheism really lacks a meaning since atheists as a group do not share a philosophy or point of view. It isn't a movement, it is a lack of a belief. At most, it is disbelieving things that lack evidence simply to believe them because others think you should.
