This is my first time working through a staffing agency and I love it. Getting paid weekly instead of bi-weekly is hot. Not having to be fully caught up in office politics is cool. I can have a few months vacation if I want (since the compensation is usually well).

Contracting can be nice, especially if you work for many different people in a short amount of time. I was contracting for the same company for almost 2 years before I got employed, and I highly prefer being employed.

I now get medical benefits, stock options, paid vacation days, internet and cell phone reimbursement, airline flights are covered, direct deposit salary, and then there's taxes. As an employee, I get the taxes withheld from my paycheck. As a contractor, I had to do quarterly payments, in addition to paying an additional self-employed tax and double the social security payments that employees have to pay. (contractors pay 15.3% just in social security and medicare taxes!!)

So for my situation, being an employee is so much better.

For those who love to travel, I think contracting is great. I like to be familiar with the route to work because I get nervous when I have to drive and find directions to a location. For this reason, I like to be employed.

The best thing about being employed is the benefits. You can still have some of those benefits as a contractor but it may cost you a little more. In addition, as an employee, the cost of those benefits are deducted from your salary before you receive it. Therefore, you don't feel the full adverse effect of getting the money and then having to spend it on benefits.

I like the way you look at being a contractor: not being involved in the office politics is a great benefit. Another benefit is that you also get to experience different companies and office environments and the way they perform tasks.
