some women do get pregnant in hopes of getting discharged from the military...
but alot of women have their child and continue on with their military contract...so not all women are using pregnancy to get out of the military

If a woman in the military becomes pregnant, she has the choice of either being discharged or continuing her military career. From what I have seen, more tend to choose to get out (especially if they are in a duel military household where the spouse is active duty as well), but a fair number stay in and continue thier careers. If they contine to serve, they will be expected to have daycare and family care plans (in case they are deployed, each military member with children must have an official plan as to how the children would be cared for while they were gone on file). The military will not give someone preferential scheduling because of childcare issues, although they will try to accomodate when a child is sick (although the member may have to use leave days).

Women in the military get pregnant because they would like to start families, just like civilian women.
You do not get discharged if you have a child. You get maternity leave like many other jobs, but then you must serve the rest of your commitment (some exceptions may apply)
Generally, only one parent is deployed at a time to reduce stress on the family, Otherwise, guardianship is given to a close friend or relative for the duration of the deployment. While state-side, there are many child care services while the parents are at work, along with on-base schools.
Keep in mind that the military is a career, and being in the military does not make you that different from the rest of society. There are many very successful, high ranking women with families. The services are very good in their support mechanisms.

Depends, I was in the USCG for a term and I don't remember anyone discharging because they had a kid- I do recall that you are able to get a hardship discharge if you have a special needs child.
Also, because you get a month of paid vacation in the military in addition to FMLA (14 weeks)- you are able, as a parent, to stay home longer with your child. That's a bonus.
Another bonus is that you additional income in your paycheck for each "dependant" you have- I think the rule is that they will allow this for up to three children, but if you have more than that-you are on your own.

I dont see as many women getting pregnant to get discharged, I see them getting pregnant in order to avoid a deployment. I see MANY preggos in ACUs around here at a time that all 4 of our brigades are deployed. My husbands platoon lost about 60% of the female soldiers due to pregnancy. Maybe some of them were unplanned, but they know how to prevent that kind of thing from happening!
Of course, they will give them a few months home with their baby, but they will deploy them anyway. Some try to time it just right so that they get pregnant right before they have to leave, so they are here 9 months plus 3 months with their baby, so essentially, they miss the whole thing. My husband says they should have to go anyway and serve the entire deployment, and just stay attached to the replacements.
So, to answer your question, YES it happens. They DO have a choice as long as the family care plan is in place.

I know plenty of females who stay in , and who also get out.
If your a single female and you get pregnant and decide to stay in the Army you need to have a Family Care plan AR 600-20 without it you can and will get a chapter out the Army.
We have 3 children all born before I join the Guard as my husband is Active duty ( didnt need a family care plan when before I went in) all we needed was a Family Care plan for me to join.
Now that I decided to go Active duty everyone has asks me and my husband do we have a secure Family Care.. of course we do , but I understand why we are being asked.

They don't all do the same thing.
Some plan to get pregnant to get out of deploying
Some plan to get pregnant so it will not interfere with a deployment.

it is 1 way to get out of service and get benefits and Honorable discharge--there are several physical standards they must not met to get out-other than that they can serve their terms military will work with them with child
