The reason why the 60GB PS3 costs more than the 80GB PS3 is because it has been discontinued and because it has the same features as the 80GB PS3, but the 60GB PS3 can play nearly all PS1 and PS2 games.
In the retail market, the 60GB PS3's price was dropped to $499, but private sellers are jacking up the prices on them because really the 60GB PS3's are the most desired and they are more rare and are very hard to come by.

The backward compatibility became removed from the PS3 because of the fact Sony wanted to save some money. it incredibly is that straightforward. it is not because of the fact of extra suitable technologies or something like it. in case you ask Sony why backward compatibility became bumped off, its reason is that the PS3 might have countless video games, and human beings would be too busy enjoying PS3 video games as a replace of PS2 video games. short historical past of the PS3: whilst the PS3 became first made, Sony became dropping approximately 3 hundred money consistent with 60 gb bought. yet as time went on, the areas needed to make the Blu-ray have been given extra low priced so Sony became dropping much less money. Now that the emotion engine and GPU are bumped off, Sony is truthfully making a residing for each PS3 bought (by way of extra low priced expenses for uncooked materials). The 4 USB ports are not all that substantial. it incredibly is in elementary terms useful once you may desire to recharge 4 controllers, yet whilst your laptop has a mini-USB port, you need to use that as a replace. it incredibly is totally almost impossible to get the 60 gb, yet human beings evaluate the 60 gb to be the superb version of the PS3 because of the inclusion of the emotion engine and GPU (US, Canada, and Japan). i think of the emotion engine became removed from the united kingdom version. i think the 60 gb makes use of application emulation for PS2 backward compatibility. because of the fact your son would not care approximately backward compatility, he can get the two the 80 gb or the one hundred sixty. the only difference between them is the complicated force length and the one hundred sixty gb includes a pastime. uncertain what the fee is yet interior the U. S., there's a a hundred dollar difference, that's favourite. 60 money for a pastime and approximately 40 money for 80 gb. i think of the one hundred sixty gb includes Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. in the journey that your son needs that pastime, then wait till October to get the one hundred sixty gb. in any different case, he can get the 80 gb if he thinks 80 gb is adequate cupboard area.

I live in the UK and therefore have a 60 GB playstation with software backwards compatibility...
I'll tell you this for free. Theres nothing wrong with the software and i've not found any games PS1 or PS2 that i couldn't play after a software update (granted the initial 'out of box' PS3 didn't play that many)
But after a software update it pretty much is full backwards compatability..
Therefore i'd go for the 80GB.. Cheaper and bigger harddrive plus as its new will have a warrenty
