How about a Carrot Souffle. It is a vegatable but it taste so wonderful you could use it for a dessert. We all love it here.

Carrot Souffle
1 1/2 lbs carrots, sliced
1/2 cup butter
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or to taste)
Add carrots to a saucepan; add water to cover; bring to a boil; cook 20-25 minutes or until tender; drain.
Add carrots, butter, and the rest of the ingredients to a food processor. Process until mixture is smooth. Spoon mixture into a lightly greased 1 1/2 quart souffle dish.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until set.

Just because they're conservative doesn't mean you have to cook that way. For years my mom always made the same old stuff whenever we had get togethers and I got really tired of it. So whenver we would go to her house, we would always make a new dish and everyone would like it. Last year I hosted Christmas dinner and I made several new dishes that everyone loved. Introduce new dishes to your new family and I'm sure they will try it.

If conservative means funds are low I would go with a sausage dish for meat. Depending on your family tastes you could add sour kraut.
We do chicken and dumplings. This goes a long way.
