Bells are rung both to call people to worship and as a sound of praise.

Originally, communities were built around a church. This was also a period when most persons did not have time pieces, nor even a calendar.
The bells were rung to call persons to mass on Sunday, to remind them to recite the angelus at noon.

In a formal religious community (one composed of indiviudals who were under vows such as priest, brothers and/or sisters or nuns) and who prayed the Office of Hours (the Liturgical Prayer of the Roman Catholic Church) the bells were rung to call them to the five to seven prayers receitged in community each day.
Originally, this was for the priest only as the others (i.e., brothers and nuns/sisters) recited the lesser or smaller office (i.e., the rosary) while often remaining at the work they had been assigned (i.e., farming, cleaning, cooking, laundry, etc.).

I am not aware the a bell is used in or at synaguoge or temple for Jewish services.

In Buddhism, a bell is used to call the practioners back to mindful awareness, and to mentally assist them in centering themselves.

Very similar to telephone ringing before you pick up! It alerts and focus us. what would happen if suddenly we hear talk in the telephone without ringing? either we will loose out on the message as we are not prepared to hear or get shocked. Similarly by ringing the bell in the temple we are alerting our self( and others around us there ) to focus on God.It eliminates distraction. Some people also give an explanation that by producing such a sound, the harmful germs get killed or threatened or reduces environmental pollution and hence heralds purity!

In our church there is no bell. But in those days to summon all the people to the church only they used to ring the bells. To show that the service is going to start.

Bell is used at every kingdom for receiving citizen complaints. Drums were used to announce messages to the people. Bells are used in bulls and horses to ring wile they walk or run. Bells were starting signal for trains. As we treat gods as pet animals, cage them in a corner of the room, we also want the gods to dance to our tune, by ringing the bell.

I never thought of the significance, we all do it as custom.
An added significance of ringing the bell is that they help drown any in-auspicious or irrelevant noises and comments that might disturb or distract the worshipers in their devotional ardor (dedication) , concentration and inner peace.

In south indian wedding they will ask the drums to be played loudly during trumanglya Dharanam.

Bengali wedding they make loud noise with drmming fingers in howling lips.
In all cultures noise or music plays an important part in functions.(except Islam).

Because years and years ago bells were used for alerting a population and notifying a population. They were used to warn of an impending attack and to notify everyone (back when it was a horrible offense not to show for church) that they had better hurry because mass or service was about to start. Simple but its the truth.

In some places it started as a way to let people know when church was starting because people didn't have clocks. It also served the whole community in time of emergency/disaster.

Back in the olden days they didn't have cell phones, or other means of communication. Only bells.
