yes you can but its very expensive
here are the taxi fares for the city of Los Angeles

Fares (ordinances 177843 & 178050 , effective 10/01/06 and 12/25/06)

All Passengers Ride for Price of One

1. $2.65 Flag drop (First 1/7th mile).

2. $0.35 For each additional 1/7th mile ($2.45 per mile).

3. $0.35 For each 47.5 seconds waiting time and/or traffic delay ($26.53 per hour).

4. $42.00 Flat fare for trips between LAX and downtown.

Area bounded by Alameda St., Santa Monica Fwy., Harbor Fwy., Cesar E. Chavez, Union Station and Chinatown.

5. $2.50 Surcharge for all trips originating at LAX.

6. $15.00 Minimum fare for trips originating at LAX (In addition to the $2.50 surcharge)
as you can its not very cheap
a better way to go is to use public transit and you get
a day pass for $5.00!

You can get around LA in a cab, but it's VERY expensive. For that price, you might as well buy a car. Hiring a driver would also be similarly expensive. It's much more reasonable to take shuttles from the airport, then use public transit.

Basically, if you are going to live here or even visit, you should have a car. LA's just too big.

However, more detailed information would be helpful in elaborating.

How long are you staying?
Where do you need to go?
Any reason you can't drive?

Do not rely on our bus system if you are coming from out of town. This is not like most other major international cities. Our mass transit is poor at best.

Taxis are hard to find and aside from the cost would require a lot of planning on your part. Visiting LA demands a rental car.

LA is a big place, I recommend you take the bus, it would be cheaper then a cab. Here's a map below, to show you just how big it is...

It is extremly expensive and you have to call the cab company each time you use it .
