Statistically, that's true here in the USA. As far as why, I think it boils down to parents not teaching their children as commanded in Deut 6:7 "And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
A lot of parents put that responsibility onto the church and/or government school system. It's no wonder so many fall away from faith.

i don't think there evn should be all different kinds of religion. I think if everybody had the same (correct) religion then the world wouldn't have half the problem they have now. People are straying from religion cause it's kinda stupid and I wouldn't want to have to be in religion if I have to keep a certain order in my life all the time. it get's annoying after a while.

People are turning from religions because of:
1. Access to science and other forms of education.
2. Dissatisfaction at the church's stance on homosexuality and lack of female hierarchy.
3. Acknowledging that the religious God is a vengeful one, this just doesn't wash well.
4. Enlightened people have no need for traditional church, they have outgrown it. It is no longer required. Obsolete.
5. Paedophile priests and the awful lies and cover-ups that have surrounded it by the Catholic Church.
5. People prefer to choose a singular path of personal enlightenment rather than being cattle herded along in unison.
6. Many doctrines are no longer relevant.
7. Not too long ago in the western world, religions had the ultimate authority to torture, condemn and ostracise its members for doubting its teachings.
People prefer freedom. They are quite good at making their own judgements without religious influence. People should be encouraged to find their own connection with God no matter how simplified or basic.

In every religion, people have been subjected to centuries of enforcement, in relation to customs, traditions and values. Now though, people are standing up to the institution and practicing their religion the way they see fit. Not every christian goes to mass every Sunday. Some may find it easier to practice their religion in a quiet place like a park or by visiting family resting places.
Not every one can learn a language by studying a book. Some people find it easier to learn through audio tapes, having a conversation etc. It's the same with religion. People are searching for the best way for them to practice.

People are not as gullible or as easily bullied as they were 200 or 300 years ago. Certainly the Christian church was supported by the oldest and one of the most ruthless terrorist organisations that ever existed. The medieval Catholic church. A church which tortured, burned and maimed thousands of people across Christendom and across several centuries. Not to mention wars and crusades which it advocated, supported and started. People are now leaving the church in droves because they will no longer be coersed into something as marginal as religion.

religion is not mere mugging up of verses or practicing of rituals. People have been misguided slowly and steadily all through the ages by men who used them for their individual profit. People still fight over different Gods! Importance is given to rituals, castes, religion, tribe, etc. instead of honoring God's all forms of creation and living with peace and harmony with them trying to make the world a better place to live!

I was not aware that the number of people straying from religion was much different than it always has been.
If it is happening, it may be do to seeking more rational explanations for things as belief systems rely on faith.

I do think people are straying from christianity because it has become a big business in the states, with all their "conferences" , "annointings", huge buildings and rich pastors. It's ridiculous and nothing to do with what the Bible really teaches about salvation, suffering, and sacrifice. This is true in America anyway.

Hi
I personally believe that people are only straying from mainstream traditional relegion into more new more exciting sects and cults
for example scientology and mellenerium organisations
I think traditional relegion is not as practical into peoples lives today liek before, everyone is running about today with no time for themselves let alone relegion.. instead they choose to join relegions that dont require as much commitment..

Most recent statistics say that religion is on the rise, especially in the high school age group (14-18). Of course if you don't count neo-paganism, wicca, or non-denominational Christian as "religions" than maybe you might have a point. But that would just be closed-minded.
