the grand am has 85k miles, the impala 75k and the malibu 78k. i'm trying to decide on my next family car and these are all around the same price but can't decide which one to get. your input would be helpful, and if you know of any common problems with these that would also help.

When you post a question like this your answers will be what problems consumers have had or what their preference is, it really is a choice only you can make as to what suits your lifestyle and preferences not someone else.

trying to decide in your mind is the question, here is a way to narrow down your choices, study this link http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html you will end up in favor of a choice over the other and when you find it, it's time for step2.

Make deal subject to an independent inspection, good luck

I would get the Impala if it has a 3.8L engine. That engine is VERY reliable and built tough. The transmissions on the other hand.... not too bad but could be better, especially if your 3800 is supercharged (which Impala's were not)

Bigger, safer, nicer.

I work with a lot of GM Cars

I own 4 GM cars

You can also look into the Grand Prix or Monte Carlo (but Monte's only come in 2 door), basically the same thing as an impala

Don't buy the pontiac I had to replace the engine, transmission, alarm system, and not to mention an electrical fire from faulty wiring! All of which starting after I hit 100k miles.

The impala is a nice car, haven't heard of any problems. However on some of the newer models I know the radio volume increases with your speed. Weird but true!

Again I haven't heard of any problems with a malibu, and out of the 3 this would be my pick. Overall it's a great family car.

Since its more likely than not that all of these were rental cars at one point or another, I would avoid all three. But if you had to go with one, I'd recommend the Impala.

Alternatively, I would recommend looking at a used Ford Fusion.

Except for Pontiac, they are basically the same. Pontiac is smaller. They are cheap midsize sedans with 3.8 v6 that underpowers these years leading to major changes since then.
