With Korea's recent sickening oil spill affecting an animal reserve, makes me think oil should not be allowed to be transported. It kills our oceans! Do we really need to use oil at all? Now that we have solar, wind and ocean power as well as natural gas, why are we still burning oil and coal?

most of the powers you said are not always available. natural gas still has pollution. we still need to use oil for us to have a more effective power. oil spills are mischievous and careless acts. oil spills depends on the people who carry the oil if they want to spill it or not. we have not yet found a very effective alternative to replace oil so even we don't want to use it, we still need to use it if we don't want to live in the dark at night.

The hulls of these tankers are supposed to be double hulled. the compartments are supposed to be sealed independently of each one so the oil can't all settle into one part of the ship. This is so it's harder for the ship to sink.

Big investment is required to make the changes - it seems the investment needed is going into weapons and war to grab oil instead of towards a better future -

We use it for much more than just energy. Plastic, pesticides, fertilizer and grease are just a few of the items that come to mind. So we will probably always need some form of it.

Yes, we really need to use oil. Not all of it is used for power generation. We can't lubricate everything with graphite.
