I am a big fan of free software and AVG is the best for checking and removing Viruses. Make sure your problem is a virus though and not something else like a registry error or adware and something other. That is the joy of Windows. There are complete packages that will do all this, but I have not found one that is free and that good. Windows One Live is the best one around. They know their software the best and know how to keep it running the best. Of don't forget about the Disk Defragger, the standard one that comes with Windows doesn't work very well. There are some that are much better.

Elaine above is spot on. I used other ones and thought they were good.
When i needed to get a new anti-virus, people on here recommended AVG. I did a scan and there were loads of crap the other ones had ignored. So you can't go wrong with it.
Google AVG.

AVG, Avira or Avast.

I personally recommend AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/. All of the above have great reputations and are free.

For Spyware, use a combination of Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/ and Adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Use the Free stuff already mentioned and double up on anti-spyware (one will pick up what others leave)

plus............. I visit Trend Micro weekly and run their Free
'Housecall' - it has occasionally picked up a trojan that AVG has missed.

Remember that Norton and Macafee use a hell of a lot of your memory - and are expensive.

AVG is the best one. Everybody I recommend this to has excellent results.

Also try Spybot another good free bit of software to keep those nasties away.

Good Luck
