Tomato sauce has an high in acid content and should prevent bacterial growth. There is an old saying if in doubt-throw it out.
If you are looking for a time line, I would recommend not more than 72 hrs, covered, in its "Original container".
To take any open food from its original sterile container and put it into a hand washed plate or bowl that not sterile is not the best idea in the world.

I always, after using my tomato paste, turn the jar upside down to prevent (rust) build up on the metal lid. I find the paste to last ages. Your seance of smell always determines the answer i reckon!

It lasts for ages. Just check it hasn't dried out and isn't furry with mould. Otherwise, you can leave it for months.
Don't listen to these date fascists who think everything must be chucked as soon as a use by date passes.

if it is in a tube, it lasts in my fridge for ages! I'm sure i've kept some for months before without it going bad. Just check it before you use it (i.e. does it look and smell normal)
