to the 2 billion people that have never heard of him and to another 2 billion people that don't know any more about him than your average Christian knows of, say, Hare Krishna?

These are (optimistic) numbers from Christian websites, but regardless of the specifics, most of the world has been brought up in a non-Christian society with only anecdotal exposure to Jesus, if any.

So they are all basically doomed, yet most Christians were born into some type of Christian household where the path of least resistance is to be Christian, in name if not in deed.

Not that that means they're automatically saved, but no matter what they still have an astronomically better chance of following Christ than any poor sap unlucky enough to be born in nearly any non-western culture.

How can the most fateful choice of our lives be so inequitable?

The Catholic Church believes that those who die never hearing of Christ but have sought the truth and does the will of God as they understand it can be saved. See Romans 2:13-16.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 1257-1261: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2.htm#art1

With love in Christ.

I study that God particularly has 2 varieties of wills. the choose of decree that's God's plan of issues that surely will ensue with the passing of time as shown in Revelations, and God's will of command (which pertains to the scripture above). An occasion of something that i think of ought to help is: Paul says in a million Thessalonians 4:3, “that's the choose of God, your sanctification: which you abstain from sexual immorality.” right here we've an extremely particular occasion of what God instructions individuals: holiness, sanctification, sexual purity. Then Paul says in a million Thessalonians 5:18, “provide thank you in all circumstances; for that's the choose of God in Christ Jesus for you.” there are various stuff that he needs basically pray approximately it and proceed analyzing the bible and he will tutor you. different examples could be the scripture the place it says "decide no longer that ye be no longer judged", and the ten commandments of direction. you will get it. there's a scripture that proclaims "in case you seek for you shall discover it" or something like that. The no longer undemanding section is doing it. (Matthew 7:21). no longer all do the choose of his father. He says so. “no longer anybody will enter the dominion of heaven.” Why? because of the fact no longer all do the choose of God.

God is not unforgiving, He gives everyone a chance. In the bible, in the book of Joshua.
The Isralietes killed everyone in this small town or city. God had ordered them to do so. They killed even infants and toddlers as well as elderly ppl. You might think this is a cruel heartless decision but why is God God? Did he not tell us that he has reasons for everything? Maybe the infants would be able to listen to the word of God when they grew up but would never change and continue to sin. God has reasons for everything. Missionaries, Church Camps, they are all spreading the word. We are not ruthless. God is not ruthless. GOd will give many ppl a chance to believe in him but some he does not give it at all b/c he could foresee the future. and tell if those ppl will ever change. so no it is not unfair. it is very fair in my opinion.

Christian answer: Pascal's Wager.

Christians sometimes proffer Pascal’s Wager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal%27s_wager ) suggesting to non-believers that they should accept Jesus (John 3:16) as some sort of insurance policy against hell, just in case it turns out god really exists. The fallacy with this line of reasoning is that faith in god for some reward or to avoid punishment is not faith at all. It is a selfish act to receive something in return for a belief. The point of religious belief so that one becomes a better person, not to receive a reward or please a spiritual being.

For those who do not have the Law (Bible) their conscious becomes a law unto itself, and God will judge them by it:

Rom 2:12-14
12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
(KJV)

There are those who have been cut off from the Gospel because of a generational curse for worshipping idols:

Exod 20:4-6
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
(KJV)

When a person seeks God, God sends a messenger...always.

Acts 10:2-4
2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.
3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.
4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
(KJV)

Why is it that all of the sudden a person says I feel called of God to be a missionary in the deep jungles of Africa or the Amazon, then goes there and preaches the gospel only to see entire households accept Jesus Christ as Savior.

The final reason to trust God's managment of the situation is:

Rom 8:29-30
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also
(KJV)

One final note that you overlook because of your inability to access good information, is that the gospel has been preached successfully since the 1st century. Do not let the limit of scope of the Catholic Church Histories fool you into believeing that that is all their was.

Unabridged Church Histories like the ones I have read point to a much greater work in all centuries since the time of Christ.

that is not true 99.9% of this world has heard of a man hung from a tree. it has even spread to jungle tribes that still head hunt. there are still a few who have not, but that is quite rare.
many of the countries that have heard of him reject him and persecute those who follow him. india, the middle east, korea, china, etc., etc.

God gives everyone a chance to believe in him or reject Him in one way or another.

contrary to popular belief, He honestly doesn't want to send anyone to hell, and he gives everyone some sort of chance to make a decision.

so in turn, you only have the problem of worrying about your own life - Let God worry about the planet.

It is CLEARLY written so in the bible, yet christians deny that those people will go to hell. They will say that only those who knowingly deny jesus go to hell. But they fail to recognize that by claiming so, they greatly invalidate and devalue the importance of accepting jesus as your savior.
