I wake in the morning with chills and pain from withdrawls and I know I am addicted now and have been for awhile ! Is there a best way to get off the med? I dont want to hurt myself and I am man enough to admit Im scared that this addiction will physically hurt like hell getting off it. I never have abused the med, only taking no more than 4-5 a day average as requested by my doc.

You need to taper off. You might need help doing this so discuss it with your doctors.

Some painkillers, like OxyContin, are very addictive. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. It is best to stop taking it gradually. Depending on how strong the medication, you might want to do it very gradually (take 4 a day for 4 weeks, then 3 a day for 4 weeks, then 2 a day for 4 weeks etc.). You doctor can give you a better idea of the best way to do this for your particular type of medication. If necessary there are programs and treatment centres that can help you..

Doctors are the worst for getting a person addicted to drugs, then they complain. Try and margin yourself. In the A.M. ask yourself, do you really need that pill. take something else and, force yourself. It takes up to three, four days to clear yourself of most drugs like Vicodin.
When you feel it coming on, get busy with something instead of thinking about it, try and skip a pill, then two. Don't take yourself off it altogether, tell yourself you'll have one coming down the line.

After 14 years on drugs for the same thing. I finally got tired of it. I take as needed now, seldom and, when necessary. I stopped smoking the same way, cold turkey, drinking was the same, I just stopped. I'm not a holy man, just my own man. Good luck.

I was recently on a lot of pain meds. I just slowly lowered my dosage over the course of a few weeks. You should speak with your doctor about your problems. He may be able to prescribe a less addictive pain killer or a drug that helps you get through withdrawal. I find that the pain I was having was often imagined. If it is not, you can go to pain management centers which can be located through your doctor's office.

You can wean yourself off it, if you doctor wants you to do that. Take it slow, I suffer from chronic pain so I take pain meds but only what they were prescribed for, I don't abuse them and I dont take more than I need to. Generally people that have true pain wont become addicted to them, because the medicine does what it is supposed to do, helps ease the pain. Most people that take them the way they are supposed to will become tolerant of them over time though, which is different than becoming addicted to them. It sounds like you may take them for chronic pain, if so, and if you have taken them for awhile your doctor may need to change your medication to a different medication or increase your dosage. . Talk to your doctor.

YES IT WILL HURT to withdrawl. i know first hand. Body chills are only the first sign of withdrawl, then comes the bone chilling true all hold withdrawl it is major three flu symptoms does not even come close to elaborate.
The way i went was Subutex, if you are not fimilar with this please look it up. It is a life saver!!!! I know it saved my life, i was not physically or mentally strong enough to do it on my own. I believe subutex is a miracle drug.

Hey Champ, I'm an ex-addict and cold turkey is the only way. Doctors are way too eager to prescribe pills for the quick fix these days. I recomend you see a naturopath. Marijuana can help with widthdrawel symptoms (seroiusly). Best of luck mate.

from what ive heard, vicodin (sp?) (one kind of pain killer) is a doozie to get off of. withdrawls soo extreme, they are comparitive to heroine. BAD. my heart goes out to you, however do it sooner than later, cause the hankering to conquer will fade, prolonging and other problems may arise. good luck
