I have heard that Weatherby rifles are engineered to use only their specific ammunition, but when I look at their rifles, it seems that they use common calibers that all rifles use, is this true?

Ok great, thanx for the responses guys. Ya I was looking more for the older Weatherby's not the newer Vanguards. So, the older Weatherby's are chambered for more common rounds as well?

Weatherby rifles chambered for Weatherby calibers must use ammunition of the Weatherby calibers for which they are chambered, only. But Weatherby is not the only company that loads ammunition in Weatherby calibers. Federal and Remington load some of them too. Weatherby rifles in standard calibers can use ammunition from any manufacturer that makes ammunition in the specific caliber in which the rifle is chambered.

Most all of the Weatherby rifles also come in standard calibers. I think ammunition for some of the Weatherby calibers are now made by manufacturers other than Weatherby. So, no, not all Weatherby rifles are limited to using propriatary ammo.

Weatherby rifles are chambered for there own calibers like the 240WM, 257WM, 270WM, 7mmWM, 300WM, 30-378WM, 340WM, 375WM, 378WM, 416WM and 460WM. All of the Weatherby cartridges are a belted case and the neck & shoulder has different angles when compaired to that of Winchester and Remington. Weatherby also has a series of rifles chambered for the popular standard & magnum cartrigdes like the 270, 7mm Rem Mag and 30-06 for example.

They chamber the most popular calibers as well as the hot Weatherby rounds. The Vanguards are chambered for mostly standard calibers with very few Weatherby calibers. But the Vanguards are made by Howa anyway.

I've always heard that the Weatherby uses its own ammo except for the ones chambered for the .30-06 Springfield round. The newer Vanguards use standard caliber ammo.
Best.

It's not the manufacturer, it's the particular caliber. You can get Wetherby rifles in standard calibers, and you can also get rifles from other mfgrs in Weatherby calibers. The critical point is to match the ammo EXACTLY to the caliber the firearm is chambered for.

ANY rifle takes only one specific cartridge.
Lotsa people make "Weatherby" ammo.
Weatherby chambers its rifles for other
cartridges than the Weatherby line.

If the gun has stamped on it, like .257 Weatherby magnum or, .300 Weatherby magnum, Weatherby ammunition, is the only thing that will work.
if it says like .30-06 or .300 Winchester magnum, you can use any manufactures ammunition of that caliber

I prefer Weatherby rifles over any other hunting rifle.. I had Weatherby custom build me a Weatherby MK V 300WBY Magnum from the ground up over 20 years ago. The rifle was not only incredible beautiful it shot one inch groups right out of the box. I consider the 300 WBY Mag to be the most versatile rifle round in the world. If I were you and you have narrowed it down to a choice of these two rifle makers. Go try them both out, see how they feel, I have to like the way a rifle feels against my shoulder.
