I moved to SoCal a few months ago and want to do something beside work and come home... What are some good volunteer opportunities around? I really would like to work with animals or kids and donate my time.

I currently already give money to United Way, but it doesn't seem enough to me with so much going on in the world today. Also with so much time on my hands too!

Any good ideas or sites? I cannot find anything for the life of me! grrr.....

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations, including many in the Orange Co area. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site.

The Union challenge in Downtown l. a. off of San Pedro and 6th highway takes walk ins for the kitchen. that is fairly undemanding and you're particularly basically serving people nutrients and doing mild freshen up. They even feed you too in case you prefer to eat something.
