I go up for TOp secret clearance for pilot in the AF. I tried weed once, which i know is not a big deal and i will just state the one time i used it. The one im worried about is 3 yrs ago at my university I was getting blocked from my internet, the tech came up couldnt figure out why. he told me when I get blocked to change my mac address numbers. Eventually i figured out it was because I was downloading music. So I was like hmm well I can just unblock myself. So w/e ... Eventually they caught on and fined me $100. Honestly I had a full load of classes and all I was thinking about was accessing the interenet to get my HW done. They say my file of it will be erased in 2 yrs.. so it should be gone.. But i will still report it. It was all in house.. with the school. Does anyone think this is minor? People tell me its not worse then a late movie rental fee..

The key to your security clearance is to be honest. The big part of the clearance interview is that it is an integrity check to see if they can trust you.

If your tech thing is not on your actual criminal record, they probably won't find out about it anyway. If it is simply on your school record, it's better they find out about it from you than from the school because then they will ask why you lied or tried to cover it up. Tell the interviewer about it when they ask about disciplinary actions in school. They will give you a chance to explain yourself.

Downloading music is not a crime, in that people who get caught usually get sued in civil court. The matter is adjudicated there. You apparently paid an administrative fine levied by your school. Where in the AF process would this come up? I don't know. But I would guess this is something you wouldn't need to disclose. And if you did, who cares, it's not like you committed a crime, admitted a crime or were convicted in a court of law. So, no worries, you didn't do anything except get fined by the university. The weed thing, I imagine will be scrutinixed much more. Also, watch out. If you think downloading music is somehow considered stealing and you are asked if you ever stole anything on a lie detector test, and you say no...that may register a reaction...that is if you truly believe you "stole" music.
Just my thoughts...you should really go ask an air force recruiter or a young pilot in training who passed a similar set of obstacles.

I don't think it's a big enough deal to keep you from getting a TS clearance, but you should report it. If you are currently squared away with the law you should be okay.

You could probably ask how to handle it. I assume you are in AFROTC or some similar program. Someone there should be able to advise you on whether you should report this.

A TS clearance requires a full background check. As long as it isn't a felony conviction, you should be okay, but it could cause a problem if you don't report it and it comes out in the investigation.

A good friend of mine was disqualified from commissioning because he reported on a physical he had migraine headaches. I don't know if his headaches were migraine, but he never had a chance to discuss it further because he was out. So I would do some homework on this one. It doesn't hurt to ask, and it may make all the difference in getting you into the program.

Who knows! Like we would know what the AF looks at when receiving applications. Sounds kind of stupid and innocent compared to the amount of killing a pilot could cause.
