I really want a cat, and I have been trying to convince them to get me one for three years, but they just don't want to. Please help me! What are the best sides of owning a cat, and what are the worst sides?

Feelings of loneliness

Pets can increase your:

The best sides are they are VERY entertaining (especially in kitten hood), they are fairly clean animals (cleaner then dogs for sure..I have 3 cats and one dog). They are extremely loving and like to cuddle.

Bad stuff..having to clean the litter box, Claws! They tend to rip furniture if they are not declawed (its best not to have them declawed because they need them in case they get outside to be able to defend themselves). And sometimes kitty can get moody or get into things at the worst possible time. (my cats tend to make alot of noise at night when I'm trying to sleep :) )

But all in all I adore them!

To convince your parents? Well do you have/ or eve had any pets? Well if you are able to keep your room clean, help out around the house, get good grades that is a way you can show your parents you are a responsible person. Also you must be sure your parents are able to afford kitty and food and vet bills in case kitty becomes sick...all these are something to think about before getting one.

It really is a huge responsibility a kitty is for life!

I'm a cat lover also, I find cats to be loyal, affectionate and relatively low maintenance. They're generally pretty quiet and they're clean. The downsides are that they can be destructive with clawing - but this can be alleviated in several ways. You can provide other scratching surfaces - like inexpensive corrugated cardboard clawing pads, and you can apply vinyl nail sheaths - a lot of vets do this for very low cost, or you can apply them at home, they're painless and last for about six weeks. They also come in different colors. One product is called Soft Paws - you can google it and order online, or buy in a pet store. Believe me, they work. The other downside for a lot of folks is the litter box. I have a covered litter box with a charcoal filter in the hood. With reasonable care, there is no odor whatsoever, and you don't have to see the cat's waste. Use a good quality clumping litter, it's economical and stays cleaner. As for veterinary care, look to your local humane societies for lost cost vet care including spay and neutering. Hope this helps, and hope you get your cat!

vet bills are expensive. it was over $250 to have her spayed..... just to have my dog's yearly check up and shots was $160, and a few months later, she must have eaten a flea, because she got tape worms... on this visit i also bought heartworm med for 2 months and flea drops.. total was another $135...

it's expensive to have a pet and take proper care of it.... getting a cat may not be in your parents' budget right now.

Sorry but if your parents are the ones paying for its food, supplies and vet bills then if they don't want a cat - you're not getting one. Wait until you're out on your own and can pay for everything on your own.
