I always did it shows they have a sence of humor and are sure of themselves, but alot of my friends are turned off by it. Pickup lines might be cheesy and stupid but they can be funny and open the lines of communication.

Yes, if you mean direct as in confident and not afraid to say they like you. But no if it makes you seem self-absorbed. I like a guy that seems a little shy but talks to you anyway and is sweet about it not x-rated.
